WEEKLY NOTES-WEEK 2
Instructional Design and Technology:
Digital Media, New Tools, and Technology University of Maryland, University College - IDT300x

WEEK 2 - Aim of lesson
Submitted: 27.03.19

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:
1. Describe UDL principles and their impact on design digital text - Universal Design for Learning
2. Describe 3 principles of visual design theory Identify at least 3 types of digital text based media
3. Apply best practices of Visual Design to create at least one digital text based media to support specific teaching objective
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
When designing, you should consider multiple means of:
1. Representation: designers and instructors should provide information in multiple formats for learners — audio, video, interactive text so learners can access content in a manner they like based on their learning style and strengths.
2. Action and expression: designers and instructors should create multiple pathways for learners to engage with materials as well as multiple options (choice) in demonstrating understanding of new knowledge, skills, and abilities.
3. Engagement: designers and instructors should infuse multiple ways to motivate learners, such as providing voice and choice Voice in in what and how content is studied to build interest and choice in approach and demonstration of understanding (see Action and Expression above).
These principles are very important to designing course and designing and scaffolding resources in courses. Explore the resources on the UDL on Campus page about how to apply these principles to designing various media. What I like about this site is that there are plenty of examples of all media we will cover in this course and explanations on how and why to apply UDL principles to support all learners: http://udloncampus.cast.org/page/media_landing#.W83VFVJRdE4 and then explore the following site to learn more about UDL principles: https://www.understood.org/~/media/80ec3f876a014989aa8b6b395d8d7428.pdf

Visual and Graphic Design
The following articles provide a deep dive into Visual Design Theory. As you review the content, keep in mind how these ideas support not only digital text for handouts and documents, but also text used in your online and blended course sites. Review at least two of the following articles:

Part I Update Digital Media Checklist

A. Statement of the learning gap (instructional need) that your content will help overcome.
You can have one identified learning gap (instructional need) that covers all digital media
you edit or create or you can identify different learning gaps / instructional needs that
change with each digital media you edit or create.

RESPONSE:
This is a Foundation Studies Multimedia course that aims to introduce student to:
1. The integration of various multimedia elements.
2. Outline the major types of commercial/industry based authoring multimedia software
3. Describe the impact that multimedia technologies have made on certain industries
4. Explain the essential attributes of computer-based design.

The Design Process poster augments and adds to the overview of the class/course introduction.
It helps to place the previous information(Multimedia introduction and video), into the context of the design and multimedia industry addressing points three and four of the course aims above.
It's also a good resource that leaves room for expanding on each of the process steps in detail, which become part of the research that students undertake.
B. Description of an instructional strategy on how the content can be infused into a learning experience.
RESPONSE:
The course has a mix of the following learning strategies:
1. Target Different Senses Within Lessons - Using infographics
Used as part of a variety of media to present information and, through discussion, help to gain a broader understanding of how the different media being presented is produced.

2. Use Open-Ended Projects - Part of an open-ended project that will give students the opportunity to choose their own project, from a prepared list that will demonstrate their skills.
3. Project-based group learning, using the open ended approach, where students can work on their own or in a groups/pairs to help each other and finalise their work.

C. Development of the following digital content: -
RESPONSE:
Digital document - Design/Multimedia Infographic poster

Part II Digital Document

1. What is the purpose of the document?
Overview of the Design and Multimedia industry production process.

2. What are the needs of the audience (students)?
To gain an overview understanding of the course and design/multimedia industry. It also needs to align with industry and higher education entry requirements.

3. What colors should you use and avoid?
Colours have been chosen for to encourage a clear understanding of the information.
Yellow—warmth, happiness, energy, and warning.
Yellow is often associated with laughter, hope, and sunshine. Viewers tend to feel optimistic
and cheerful when exposed to this color.
Red - Is used as the numbered highlight colour, drawing attention to each of the steps.

4. How to integrate images and graphics effectively?
Create flow with left to right directional movement(taking advantage of learned instinctual reading impulse), reinforced by the use of numbers and arrows.

5. Visual Design idea from this week’s lecture: and Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity.
As above for point number 4.

This element was created to enhance the overview descriptions, learning, communication of ideas and concepts related to this course.
It places the previous information(Multimedia introduction and video week 1 activity), into the context of the design and multimedia industry, addressing points three and four of the course learning objectives below.

**Course Learning Objectives**

**Objective 3** -
Describe the impact that multimedia technologies have made on certain industries

**Objective 4** - Explain the essential attributes of computer-based design
It's also a good resource that leaves room for expanding on each of the process steps in detail,
which become part of the research that students undertake.
1. *What is the purpose of the document?*
Overview of the Design and Multimedia industry production process.

2. *What are the needs of the audience (students)?*
To gain an overview understanding of the course and design/multimedia industry. It also needs to align with industry and higher education entry requirements.
3. *What colors should you use and avoid?*
Colours have been chosen to encourage a clear understanding of the information.
Yellow background — warmth, happiness, energy, and warning, depending on context.
Yellow is often associated with laughter, hope, and sunshine. Viewers tend to feel optimistic
and cheerful when exposed to this color.
Red - Is used as the numbered highlight colour, drawing attention to each of the steps.

4. *How to integrate images and graphics effectively?*
This elements create visual flow with left to right directional movement, taking advantage of learned reading patterns, reinforced by the use of numbers, arrows and the patterned repetition of elements.
