WEEKLY NOTES-WEEK 8

Instructional Design and Technology:
Digital Media, New Tools, and Technology University of Maryland, University College - IDT300x

WEEK 8 - PORTFOLIO DESIGN & SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION

As you have noticed with each module in this course, each one has become more technical than the previous and the final module will continue this pattern in your exploration of emerging technologies.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  1. Reflect on acquired knowledge, skills and abilities as a result of this course,

  2. Discuss different technologies and instructional strategies used for instructional design use,

  3. Create a digital portfolio incorporating digital media assets intended for a designated learning audience

--------------------------------------------------

Part I: Statement of Learning Goal & Developing Digital Media

Statement of the learning gap (instructional need) that your developed content will help overcome.  You can have one identified learning gap (instructional need) that covers all digital media you edit or create or you can identify different learning gaps / instructional needs that change with each digital media project you create for 300x.

YOU WILL NEED TO SUBMIT:

1. Description of an instructional strategy on how the content can be infused into a learning experience.

RESPONSE:

Multimedia course overview -
The on-line multimedia course to be developed aims to introduce students to basic digital media technologies in a global context. It introduces students to integrating text, sound and images using industry standard computer software within a single digital information environment.

Students will learn basic drafting, characteristics of various multimedia elements and presentation options.

These include the:
1. Authoring of sound
2. Image manipulation
3. Creation of animations
4. Video production

As part of this process one of the key components is Image Manipulation. This has been the component being developed for in this course, through the production of digital resources to present the "Constructivist Self Portrait" poster project.

Using photoshop and Illustrator, within the context of this project, the ‘Instructional need’ has been the introduction of an art movement(Constructivists), the structural and aesthetics characteristics of this style and the skills required to create a photomontage/collage layout that explores the different aspects of the Constructivist style, students own self portrait and personal characteristics.

Course design structure

On a broader level, a Foundation Multimedia/ Digital Media course, in the state of Victoria, Australia, needs to address the following educational and industry considerations:
1. University undergraduate course entry requirements

2. Senior secondary education(Victorian Certificate of Education) digital media guidelines

3. Industry education and skills entry requirements

This is achieved through a consultation process directly aligning undergraduate University courses, industry needs and following the Victorian Certificate of Education or VCE Digital Media Study Guide.

The VCE is one credential available to secondary school students who successfully complete year 11 and 12 in the Australian state of Victoria. It is the certificate that the majority of students in the state of Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. The VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university or VET(Vocational Education and Training) and to industry employment.

The VCE / VET Creative and Digital Media program is drawn from a national training package and offers portable qualifications which are recognised throughout Australia. These qualifications provide students with a broad range of knowledge and skills to pursue a career or further training in the screen and media industry in areas such as film and television production, animation, radio broadcasting and photography.

Instructional Strategy

The multimedia course being developed for in this module is primarily based on a Constructivist educational theory and has elements of other instructional strategies, such as Targeting different senses within lessons, Sharing of experiences and Reflecting on experiences. It aims to give students a very practical approach of the topics and processes being covered.

It's also being designed for a predominantly foreign student cohort with English as their second language and have the following characteristics:

  • Age group is 18 to mid 30's.

  • Different levels of tech awareness

  • Predominantly non-design / art background

  • Not familiar with western art, design practice

Based on this background, all resources developed need to be presented through a variety of multimedia elements and create a degree of repetition.

This is where digital media design is well placed to delivering the same message / information in varying types of formats which achieves a higher level of engagement and retention. This appeals to a range of learning styles by using the following:

1. Spoken and written directions

2. Viewing videos

3. Info-graphics presentations

4. Practical exercises

5. Hands on demonstrations

6. Incorporating in class reflection time of experiences

7. Organised exhibition outings

8. Taking part in organising their own exhibitions

9. Collaborative work

10. Industry presentations and talks

In the past this has provided me with very rewarding educational experiences and great student results. These experiences have confirmed that there's not a single path to delivering educational content, but a combination of approaches, that can be adaptable with every student group. It's our responsibility to have flexibility, be mindful and choose the most appropriate approach, and not be bound or confined to follow a single instructional strategy.
