Instructional Design Learning Theories - IDT100x

WEEK 7 -

Submitted: 28.11.19

What will you learn this week?

By the end of Week 7, you will be able to:

  1. discuss microlearning experiences and microcredentialing

  2. reflect on learning theories and approaches to learning from your microlearning project.

Micro Learning Project

Discussion 6: Microlearning Reflection
Please respond to the following ideas in your initial post.
Identify the main learning theory, or theories, that supported your learning of a new technology tool.

1. The tool that I have been learning right through this course for the first time has been the WIX website design tool, which I found easy to learn and quickly produced the required needs for this course.
I also found as my requirements differed from week to week I was curious to dive deeper into combining tools and experimenting to see some exiting results that addressed my immediate needs.
My main method of learning was initially, the short videos available through the Help menu of the WIX interface and the many how-to YouTube videos.
This approach has some direct connections to the andragogy and constructivist learning theories covered in this course.

It was directly relevant to an overall task, targeting certain needs, immediately available and digestible in small chunks of information.

2. Describe how you 'used' the theories principles and why they were so effective in supporting your learning experience.

Constructivist approach - "Learning by doing"
Getting straight into the learning of relevant skills is often the quickest way for me to learn a process or a set of skills that need to be applied to task. One of the memorable quotes once mentioned to me in an educational setting was "Learning by Doing".
It's become one of my preferred approaches to designing instruction and it's applicable for a wide variety of situations and student demographics.

Androgogy -
Adult learning approach is heavily based on relevance to task and I found that having a solid goal to achieve is often the most productive approach for my learning. It allows me to focus and target key components that I have to learn or complete in order to achieve a short term goal. The process is short, sharp and to the point of completing the task.

It's the alignment of the short term skills that can make this approach a powerful tool, as it has the potential to constantly keep the student engaged, as long as the importance of the end goals are maintained.

3. What was the biggest 'ah-ha' moment about your own approach to learning.

The "a-ha" moment was understanding the approach in the sequencing of the video components. All the videos are short, between 1:10 - 4:20min in length, and only cover the required skills to perform a specified task within a group of related tasks.
Another approach was to target the addition of specific functions to the website, with the same minimum number of steps, making this an efficient, time effective approach that addressed short term goals.
The skills covered were global and portable to other circumstances, where the approach was similar or the same but the tool or function different.

None of the videos took the time to create a whole sequence of interactive elements on a page, as this could become too long for the average millennial and in danger of not being relevant to task.

Learning Theory Table

By the end of Week 7, create a table or other method to present an overview that compares each of the learning theories covered during the course. You may choose a variety of ways to communicate this information. For example, you may choose to create a Venn diagram, an info-graphic, or some other type of visual representation.
